What is an optional NCOER?

An optional NCOER, indicated by the 60-day option, is a type of evaluation that allows leaders to rate a Soldier who has served in their position for at least 60 days but does not require it to be done as part of the regular evaluation cycle. This option is available for situations where an NCO has taken on the responsibilities of their role but may not yet qualify for a mandatory evaluation such as those triggered by a change of rater or annual review.

Using the 60-day option can be advantageous for Soldiers who are demonstrating performance and potential and can provide them with important feedback or a well-deserved acknowledgment even outside the normal annual review period. In contrast, evaluations like relief for cause, change of rater, and annual NCOERs are mandatory and have specific conditions surrounding their timing and circumstances.
